Downloading Videos on a Chromebook

Chromebooks handle downloads a little differently from Windows or Mac. Here's what to expect.

Where files land by default

ChromeOS saves downloads to a local Downloads folder accessible through the Files app, the same one used for files synced from Google Drive, which can make it worth double-checking you're looking at local storage rather than cloud.

Storage is often limited

Many Chromebooks ship with modest local storage, since ChromeOS leans on cloud storage by design — downloading several HD videos in a row can fill that up faster than on a typical laptop.

Moving files to Drive to save space

Dragging a downloaded video from the Files app into a Google Drive folder frees local space while keeping the file accessible from any device signed into the same account.
